FACE OF AMERICA 2003

What is Face of America?

It is an annual cycling journey planned and organized by World T.E.A.M. Sports, a non-profit organization committed to bringing diverse groups of people together through sports events and happenings. Face of America 2003 will occur at the time of the second anniversary of 9/11. It is an event to bring all people together, to show that we care about each other and that we believe that diverse and unified teams, working together, can accomplish awesome goals. And as we honor and pay our respects, we also signal a need to look beyond our differences as human beings, and draw on our similarities, with each person’s unique talents and skills working to make the world better.

Teams Within One Team
We hope to build a team of 1,000 cyclists, with lots of volunteers and friends along the way to help out. And we will do some activities and staging so the entire group will feel like they are working together as a team. Additionally, we hope that groups of people, companies and organizations will consider building their own teams… coming and participating as a team, within a larger team. And here, we will help make it a unique and purposeful experience for everyone. We want everyone to experience that very special World T.E.A.M. Sports’ “connection between people” and to leave with a sense of unity and purpose. A number of clever ideas will be shared with teams, as they register, and we also welcome your ideas and input to make this the best cycling event ever.

Is this a fundraising event?

Most importantly it is a friend-raiser; but it is also a fundraiser to help build and expand an important sports charity, now in its 10th anniversary year. We are asking each participant to pay a modest fee to help defray the costs of the production of the event… $500. Additionally, we are asking that you raise a minimum of $1000, which will go directly to support our on-going outreach programs and activities. All money raised will support our programs and will sustain our good work for the year ahead. The team handbook will outline event costs, but will also elaborate on how the $1000+ you raise will assist our organization. Contributions can be earmarked for specific programs and initiatives. All contributions, beyond participation fees, are tax-deductible to the extent the law allows.

Participation Fees
After we receive your deposit, the remaining fee to participate is $250 (total cost to participate $500, plus minimum fundraising fee). The deadline to receive payment is Monday, September 1, 2003. This fee will defray a portion of the costs of meals, refreshments, lodging, transportation support, special events and liability insurance. Scholarship assistance can be provided for those who are unable to cover their fees. Please attach details of your need with this application.

Fundraising Fees

Face of America 2003 requires a minimum fundraising fee of $1000. Upon receipt of your application and participation fee deposit, additional fundraising information and event proceed details will be provided.

Can I volunteer?
If you want to be involved, but don’t necessarily want to hop on a bike, there are other ways you can be a team member for Face of America. If you would like to become a volunteer, we would appreciate your assistance. For more information call World T.E.A.M. Sports at 1.866.WTS.FACE.

 ABOUT THE RIDE

When is the ride?
Friday, September 12, 2003 - Sunday, September 14, 2003

What route will we take and how long is the ride?

We will assemble as a team on Thursday evening, September 11, 2003 the second anniversary of 9/11, and participate, together, in an event to symbolize our solidarity as human beings on this planet. On Friday morning, after a kickoff ceremony in New York, we will begin our journey on the shore of New Jersey and for the next three days, travel down through Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, ending the ride in Washington, DC, after approximately 280 miles. Overnight accommodations will be provided in “world-class” tent villages.

What are the skill requirements?

You don’t have to be training for the Tour de France to participate in this team experience. It is not a race. It is a team ride, drawing on the unique skills and talents of each and every team member… of all abilities and levels of cycling. Support vehicles and personnel will assist you all along the way. The idea is to do the best you can… cover the most distance you can… and most importantly, have some fun… together.

When is the application deadline?

Monday, September 1, 2003. However, because space is limited to the first 1,000 riders, we advise that you register as soon as possible.

What kind of information can I expect to find in the handbook?

Upon receipt of your application, a comprehensive event handbook will be emailed or mailed to you. We will try our very best to make sure we answer every question you may have regarding Face of America 2003. This will include, but is not limited to: registration check-in details; event times; luggage requirements; food/accommodation details; and special event schedules. We will also provide training guidelines to help prepare you for the ride.
